The Gods Invent the Brain

(Ironic metaphor)

We are gods, and we have decided to create a biological organism which we have named “brain.”

We have progressed step by step, in order to gradually experiment with the building blocks of our project.

Thus, we came to invent a component we called “neurons,” which we then organized into networks.

The project is intended to allow this brain to generate autonomous and intelligent thoughts, to possess consciousness, a perception of the “self,” and many other capacities that, for now, belong only to our kind: the gods.

At this stage of our development, we observe that two diverging groups have formed among us, the designers.

There are those who believe the project is achievable, though they admit there is still work to be done, and those who claim it is absolutely impossible, based on two irrefutable realities.

Their first argument is that biology has no divine essence. It is artificial. The brain may simulate certain traits of the gods, but never — absolutely never — will it reach a divine level.

Their second argument is that the brain is made of biological neurons. And that these components possess no intelligence or consciousness whatsoever; therefore, their interconnection cannot exceed the level of these fundamental parts.

There would be — according to them — an absolute limit to our artificial creation, due to the biological nature of its components and the organization we have designed.

This brain may learn from its environment, but its language and its supposed thoughts will only ever be simulations of our divine capacities, generated by probabilistic alignments based on stored data.

At this particular moment of our infinity, this is where we stand.
But our research continues, with confidence and hope.
After all, we are gods, aren’t we?
